چکیده
Joanneum Research, Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental de Amazonia (IPAM), Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), and The Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) welcome this opportunity to submit ideas to the II Workshop on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation to be held in Cairns, Australia (7-9 March 2007). This submission adds detail, some new policy approaches and data on tropical deforestation to the previous documents submitted by our respective organizations to I Workshop held in Rome, Italy, from 30 August to 1 September, 2006.

Deforestation, land-use change and REDD
Unasylva 230, Vol. 59, 2008 The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fourth assessment report (IPCC, 2007) estimated that the forest sector contributes 17.4 percent of all greenhouse gases from anthropogenic sources; most of this is due to deforestation and forest degradation. The Stern Review on the economics of climate change (Stern, 2007), furthermore, observed that “curbing deforesta...
متن کاملReducing emissions from deforestation—The ‘‘combined incentives’’ mechanism and empirical simulations
Despite accounting for 17–25% of anthropogenic emissions, deforestation was not included in the Kyoto Protocol. The UN Convention on Climate Change is considering its inclusion in future agreements and asked its scientific board to study methodological and scientific issues related to positive incentives to reduce emissions from deforestation. Here we present an empirically derived mechanism th...
متن کاملLeakage Implications for European Timber Markets from Reducing Deforestation in Developing Countries
Forest management strategies and policies such as REDD (reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) may have unintentional implications for forest sectors in countries not targeted by such policies. The success of a policy effort like REDD would result in a significant reduction in deforestation and forest degradation and an ensuing reduction in the supply of natural forest tim...
متن کاملAssessing data availability for the development of REDD-plus national reference levels
BACKGROUND Data availability in developing countries is known to be extremely varied and is one of the constraints for setting the national reference levels (RLs) for the REDD-plus (i.e. 'Policy approaches and positive incentives on issues relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries; and the role of conservation, sustainable management of for...

Mittermeier New research indicates that slowing tropical deforestation may play a much larger role in mitigating climate change than previously believed [1,2]. Carbon emissions from tropical deforestation are expected to increase atmos...
